About Sky Archivist

Hi, I’m Cyndee.

I have been chasing light and capturing moments since 1981.

What began as a simple love of photography has become a lifelong practice of noticing: the sky shifting color before anyone looks up, the quiet bend of a flower toward the sun, the stillness of water, the texture of the land, the presence of animals, and the small, fleeting scenes often hidden in plain sight.

I am most at home wandering the world with a camera in hand, acknowledging the moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. My work is rooted in attention, wonder, and the belief that beauty does not always announce itself. Sometimes it waits quietly in the ordinary until someone slows down long enough to see it.

Why Sky Archivist?

It starts with my name. Cynthia means “goddess of the moon,” and from the time I was a little girl, I felt as though the moon was mine. It followed me. I would look up, and there it was, keeping watch. I did not have language for it then, but the sky was the first thing that made me feel as though I was not alone.

Nature, however, was another story. As a child, it bored me. Dirt, rocks, stillness. I did not understand the appeal. I wanted to be where things were happening.

Somewhere along the way, that changed. The peace and stillness I once resisted became what I craved. What had seemed boring became blissful.

Then there were the storms. Rain, thunder, lightning. That is my most restful environment. When the sky opens up and gets loud, I settle. I always have. There is something about the sky deciding to be dramatic that makes me feel as though I can stop performing and simply breathe.

So I started taking pictures. I photographed the sky, the water, and the way light moves across a mountain when no one is looking. I cropped out the power lines, parking lots, and distractions until only the sky and some small, honest thing remained: a silhouette, a treeline, a barn in the rain.

I was not trying to become a photographer. I was trying to keep something.

Some evenings, the sky feels like a library, with every cloud holding a story. I began collecting those stories, preserving them before they disappeared and sharing them so someone else could see what I had seen.

That is what an archivist does. An archivist notices, preserves, and makes sure something meaningful remains available when we need it.

Through Sky Archivist, I create photographic archives of sky, water, land, and wildlife. I am not the subject of these images. I am the map and the flashlight. I show you where I found the good light. You decide what it means.

Each photograph is an invitation to pause, look closer, and remember that the world is still offering us light.

Photography With a Purpose

Sky Archivist is being created with a purpose beyond making and preserving photographs.

When prints become available for purchase, 20% of each print’s sale price will be donated to organizations working to protect the natural world and the lives that depend upon it.

Sales of Sky and Water images will help support access to clean water. Sales of Land and Wildlife images will help support wildlife and habitat conservation.

The mission is simple: notice what is here, preserve what matters, share the light, and let the work do some good.
